Role Overview
The Mainframe Practice Head is responsible for defining, evolving, and executing the strategic direction of the mainframe services portfolio. This includes modernization, operations, and transformation initiatives, with a strong emphasis on AI integration, cloud connectivity, and cost optimization.
Core Responsibilities:
1. Portfolio Strategy & Governance
- Define and maintain the end-to-end mainframe services portfolio (MFaaS, modernization, optimization, advisory services).
- Align offerings with market trends, client needs, and organizational capabilities.
- Drive AI and automation integration across portfolio elements (e.g., AIOps, predictive maintenance, threat detection).
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear business language for non-technical stakeholders.
- Convert business requirements into actionable technical solutions.
2. Modernization & Innovation
- Lead initiatives around replatforming, refactoring, and cloud integration (e.g., ZOWE, zCX, Ansible, Kubernetes).
- Collaborate with engineering and delivery teams to embed GenAI, Watson Orchestrator, and OpenAI tools into modernization scenarios.
- Champion innovation by identifying emerging technologies and integrating them into the portfolio.
3. Stakeholder Engagement & Enablement
- Partner with sales, delivery, and alliance teams to ensure portfolio readiness and market fit.
- Support enablement through training programs and certification frameworks.
- Facilitate knowledge-sharing and adoption of modernization tools across teams.
4. Performance Monitoring & Reporting
- Track portfolio KPIs, headcount alignment, and certification progress across geographies.
- Provide regular updates to leadership, including 360° monthly reviews with senior management.
- Identify risks, escalate issues, and recommend corrective actions.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of mainframe technologies (z/OS, RACF, CICS/MQ, DB2, IMS).
- Ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences and convert business needs into technical solutions.
- Strategic thinking and portfolio lifecycle management expertise.
- Familiarity with AI/ML, cloud-native architectures, and DevSecOps practices.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and facilitation skills.
- Experience in KPI analysis, risk escalation, and standards optimization.
- Day-to-day portfolio management and project review facilitation.
