Job Title Senior Backup Engineer (Avamar L3)
Summary
The Senior Backup Engineer (L3) is responsible for the design, administration, and advanced troubleshooting of enterprise backup environments built on Dell Avamar and Data Domain. The role owns complex incident resolution, performance tuning, capacity planning, and drives improvements to meet RPO/RTO and compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and optimize Avamar backup infrastructure
- Manage datasets, schedules, and retention policies for file system, VMware, database, and NAS/NDMP workloads.
- Configure and support Avamar integrations with Data Domain (DD Boost, MTrees/LSUs, certificates, replication).
- L3 operations and incident management
- Lead troubleshooting of complex backup and restore failures, including Avamar client/server, DDOS, and network issues.
- Analyze logs (avtar, avagent, MCS, GSAN, hfscheck, ddrmaint, DD logs) and provide root cause and permanent fixes.
- Performance and capacity
- Monitor backup performance and capacity, identify bottlenecks (clients, network, storage), and implement tuning.
- Perform capacity planning for Avamar grids and Data Domain, including cleaning, retention optimization, and expansion planning.
- Design, projects, and improvements
- Contribute to backup architecture, migrations, technology refresh, and DR design (grid/DDR replication, failover/failback).
- Implement and document standards, runbooks, and automation for recurring operational tasks.
Required Skills and Experience
- 5–8+ years in enterprise backup administration, including strong hands‑on Avamar and Data Domain experience.
- Deep knowledge of:
- Avamar concepts (datasets, policies, checkpoints, hfscheck, replication, MCCLI).
- Data Domain configuration (MTrees, cleaning, DD Boost, certificates, replication, capacity management).
- Experience with backup of:
- VMware, Windows, Linux/UNIX file systems.
- Databases such as Oracle (RMAN) and SQL Server with Avamar plug‑ins.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across OS, network, and storage layers; ability to interpret detailed logs and error codes.
- Familiarity with ITIL processes (incident, problem, change) and documentation best practices.
Nice-to-Have
- Experience with PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM).
- Exposure to NAS (PowerScale/Isilon), SAN, and virtualized environments at scale.
